Auburn Rehabilitation & Health Care Center Resident, Hermann Smith

Resident Spotlight: Hermann Smith

Hermann Smith has been a resident since February 11, 2012 – and the story of how he found Auburn is certainly far from ordinary! He first discovered our community while working as a medical salesman. One night while passing through town, Hermann was snowed in. Rather than face the dangerous road conditions, he was offered a bed and decided to spend the night here.

Hermann liked his time here so much that he decided to come back – in fact, when it came time to choose a community, he never even considered living anywhere else. “I love the food, and the staff is very helpful,” Hermann said. What were his search criteria? He wanted to “relax and have a good time” in his retirement, which made our community a natural fit.

Interests, Hobbies and Background

Hermann likes working with his hands – doing things like yardwork, cutting grass and making everything look pretty. His friends know him as a happy, easygoing person who loves to laugh. Raised near the Roxana and Wood River area in Madison County, IL, a major reason Hermann chose Auburn is that it was close to home.

He is most proud of his time in the military serving as a Navy medic in the Vietnam War. His father was a pilot, and he says it was a great honor for him to enlist as well. He spent his time helping soldiers in the field for one and a half years. After a mission, he was able to recover a photo of a fallen soldier’s family. He took it and sent it home to the soldier’s wife with a note: “He wanted you to have this.”

Hermann is inspired by his faith and does his best to be grateful for every single day. “Being able to help injured people on the battlefield gave me much pride. I pray and thank God every night for the opportunity and shared lots of sympathy with their families.”
